Applying for a Drivers Licence

The Roads and Maritime Services website has information on driver’s licences.

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/

You may drive on your overseas licence for as long as you are here on your temporary resident visa.  You should carry a photocopy of your visa in the car to prove your visitor/temporary resident status.

If your licence is not in English, it must be translated into English. You should make an appointment to go to a NSW Service Centre, with your overseas licence and the staff will take a copy and arrange a translation:

If you become an Australian permanent resident or hold a permanent visa under the Commonwealth Migration Act 1958 and you intend to stay in NSW, you are not considered to be a visitor. As such, you are allowed to drive in NSW on a current overseas licence for a maximum of three months after arriving in Australia. If you wish to continue driving, you must obtain a NSW driver licence.

Drivers from New Zealand must obtain a NSW licence within 3 months of arriving.

New Road Rules

From November 2012, new and revised road rules apply.  Please read carefully:

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/index.html

In particular, there are new rules affecting the use of mobile phones.

While a vehicle is moving or stationary (but not parked), a driver may only use a mobile phone to make or receive a call or use the audio playing function:

  • If the mobile phone is secured in a fixed mounting;

or

  • If not in a mounting, use of the mobile phone must not require a driver to touch or manipulate the phone in any way. All other functions including texting, video messaging, online chatting, reading preview messages and emailing are prohibited.

A driver in a moving or stationary vehicle (unless parked) MUST NOT HOLD a phone in his or her hand other than to pass the phone to a passenger.

E-Toll Tags

There are many toll roads in Sydney and throughout Australia.   It is no longer possible to pay tolls using cash.  You may apply online for an electronic tag (linked to your credit card) for your car which registers each time you travel through a toll zone.  Alternatively, visit a Roads & Maritime Services office to obtain an Etag in person.
